Twitter 101 – article 3 of 4
Using Twitter for your Business
So how can you use Twitter to the benefit of your Business? The most important thing for you to remember is that, as with other social networking sites like Facebook, users do NOT want to be advertised to. They want to know they are getting something else out of following you – something that is exclusive to the Twitter or Facebook community.

Follow Others and they will Follow You!
Building a Twitter following takes time, but it is a tremendous way to interact with a community – and possible clients! The best way to get started is to follow other people on Twitter who meet certain criteria – for example:
- Follow others and they will follow you
- If you want to follow South Africans, see who is following other popular South Africans on Twitter and follow them. Many will follow you back.
- Get to know how to use twitter and the helpful applications. (i.e. what is “Hashtags”, @ sign, retweets ect.)
- Once you’re ahead with a few 100 followers, you need to start growing your message.
- Offering a service – such as information – or a discount or added benefit to your followers through interacting with your brand on Twitter is a phenomenal way to build meaningful and long lasting impressions of your brand in people’s minds. How about getting a client, or your CEO or customer service manager on Twitter to answer any questions people have about your product or service?
- What about running a ‘Retweet or win’ competition, where any follower who retweets a short message about your new product or service stands a chance to win an exclusive prize? The great thing about Twitter for South Africans is the real time larger-than-life celebrity conversations locally and abroad – but more on that in our next post.
The great thing about Twitter is how you can connect to your stakeholders and grow your business – but more about the companies of South Africa on Twitter in our next post.
